Royal Society Carriage Set R-46 – 1952

MATERIALS: Royal Society Cordichet, Art. 953, Size 30: 24 balls of No. 3016 Pink

Steel Crochet Hook No. 7

20 yards of pink satin ribbon, l/2 inch wide. Cover measures 24 x 36 inches

Pillow measures 12 x 15 inches.

Use thread double throughout.

GAUGE: 9 sc measure 1 inch; 1 complete pattern (6 rows) measures l 1/2 inches.

COVER . . . Starting at long side make a chain 42 inches long.

1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across until row measures 34 inches (306 sc). Cut off remaining

chain. Ch 1, turn.

2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 3, turn.

3rd row: Retaining all loops on hook, draw up a loop in the 2nd ch from hook, in the next ch and in the first 2 sc, thread over

and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (star st made), * make another star st by drawing up a loop in the fastening chain, in the last st of previous star st, in the same sc as last st was made and in the next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.

4th row: Sc in each star st across. Ch 1, turn.

5th row: Sc in each sc across (306 sc). Ch 7, turn.

6th row: Skip first 2 sc, * tr tr in next sc, ch 1, skip 1 sc. Repeat from * across, ending with tr tr in last sc. Ch 1, turn.

7th row: Sc in each tr tr and in each sp across, ending with sc in 6th ch of turning chain. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat 2nd to 7th rows incl until piece measures 22 inches, ending with 5th row. Break off.

BORDER … 1st rnd: Attach thread to any corner, 5 sc in corner, sc closely around, making 5 sc in each corner. Join.

2nd rnd: Sc in each sc around, making 3 sc in center sc of each corner. Join.

3rd rnd: Work in star st pattern around. Join.

4th rnd: Sc in each star st around, making 5 sc in center star st at each corner. Join.

5th rnd: Repeat 2nd rnd.

6th, 7th and 8th rnds: Repeat 3rd, 4th and 5th rnds. Break off at end of 8th rnd.

Cut ribbon into strips slightly longer than length of openwork rows. Lace ribbon through sps and fasten ends securely.

PILLOW . . . Starting at narrow end make a chain 12 inches long.

1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across until row measures 10 inches (90 sc). Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1,

turn. Work in pattern as for Carriage Cover until piece measures 12 inches, ending with 5th row. Work Border

and complete as for Carriage Cover.

Sweet Dreams Baby Blanket – 1940s

MATERIALS-Lily Cotton Krutting Yam, Art. 600: 7-skeins White and 3-skems Baby Blue or Pink.

Crochet hook size 1.

BLOCK-In White, ch 7, sl st In starting st. Ch 4, dc in ring, (ch 1, dc in ring) 14 times, ch 1, sl st in 3d st of 4-ch, sc in next 1-ch.

ROW 2-* (Ch 1, sc In next 1-ch) 4 times, ch 3, sc in same 1-ch. Repeat from * twice. (Ch 1, sc in next 1-ch) 3 times, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, hdc) in 1st sc.

ROW 3-* (Ch 1, sc in next 1-ch) 4 times, ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in corner loop. Repeat from * 3 times, making 2-ch and hdc in place of final 3-ch.

Repeat Row 3 twice, each with one more 1-ch space on each side. Cut leaving tail 3 ” long

ROW 6-In color, sl st in a corner loop, * (ch 1, sc to next 1-ch) across, ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in corner loop. Repeat from * 3 times, working over end left from last row. Cut leaving tail 3″ long.

ROW 7-In White repeat last row, except make only 1-ch between corner sc. Cut leaving tail 6″ long, thread to needle and fasten on back.

FLOWER-In color, (ch 4, 2 dc In 4th st from hook, ch 3, sl st in same st) 4 times, sl st in starting st.

Cutleaving tail 6″ long and fasten on back.

Tack flower on center of Block.

Make 35 Blocks.

Thru one loop of each st, sew together into strips of 5 Blocks each, then sew strips together, matching corners exactly.

BORDER-In White, sc in one corner 1-ch, * (sc in next sc, sc in next 1-ch) 9 times, sc in sc, 3 sc across joining of Blocks. Repeat from * to corner, (sc, ch 3, sc) in corner 1-ch. Repeat from * around, making 2-ch and hdc in place of final 3-ch.

ROW 2-(Ch 1, sc in next 2d sc) around, with ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in each corner. End with 2-ch and hdc. Cut leaving tail 3″ long.

ROW 3-Turn, in color, sl st in one corner, (ch 1, sc in next 1-ch space) around, with ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in each corner, working over end from left from last row. Cut 3″ long.

Repeat Row 3 seven times, alternating White and color.

EDGE-Join White to one corner, ch 4 and drop in front, join color to next 1-ch space, ch 4 and drop in front, * pick up White, sc in next 1-ch behind color, ch 4 and drop in front, pick up color, sc in next 1-ch behind White, ch 4 and drop in front. Repeat from * around, fastening 2 loops in corner 3-chs. Fasten off.

Stretch and pin right-side-down, and steam and press thru a cloth.

Baby’s Afghan

Materials required :

2 pounds Cream White BEAR BRAND 4 fold Saxony Yarn,

2 pieces pink ribbon one inch wide.

Chain 172.

1st row: 3 d.c. in first chain, skip 3, 3 d.c. in next stitch, and repeat to end of row, catching into last stitch with 1 s.c.

2nd row: 3 d.c. in each middle chain stitch between the clusters,

and fasten at end of last cluster with s.c.

Turn, and in the middle d.c. of each cluster of the first row make 3 d.c., fastening again at the end with a s.c. This holds the various rows together. Repeat until afghan is desired size, always being sure to catch at end with s.c.

Finish about the edges with a row of holes for ribbon, and a scallop of 12 d.c. Run in ribbon, and make a full rosette at each corner.

This stitch has the merit of washing particularly well.

Baby Set No. 203 – 1945

REQUIREMENTS:

YARN: 5-ounces of 3-ply Baby Yarn.

CROCHET HOOK: #4 Bone.

Ribbon for Trimming.

Starting at the neck, make a chain of 77 sts; 1 s c in 2nd ch from hook and 1 s c in next 12 sts (front); 3 s c in next st; 1 s c in next 11 sts (sleeve); 3 s c in next st; 1 s c in next 24 sts (back); 3 s c in next st; 1 s c in next 11 sts (sleeve); 3 s c in next st; 1 s c in last 13 sts (front) ch 1 and turn.

2nd ROW: 1 s c in next 14 sts; 3 s c in next st; 1 s c in next 13 sts; 3 s c in next st; 1 s c in next 26 sts; 3 s c in next st; 1 s c in next 13 sts; 3 s c in next st; 1 s c in last 14 sts. Chain 1 and turn.

3rd ROW: 1 s c in next 15 sts; 3 s c in next st; 1 s c in next 15 sts; 3 s c in next st; 1 s c in next 28 sts; 3 s c in next st; 1 s c in next 15 sts; 3 s c in next st; 1 s c in last 15 sts.

Continue in the above manner, increase at each of the 4 corners, by putting 3 s c into the middle st of the group of 3 on the row below.

NOTE; You will have 1 more st each time on the fronts and 2 sts more in the sleeves and back.

Work until the yoke has this for the LAST ROW: 1 s c in next 28 sts; 3 s c in next st; 1 s c in next 41 sts; 3 s c in next st; 1 s c in next 54 sts; 3 s c in next st; 1 s c in next 41 sts; 3 s c in next st; 1 s c in last 28 sts.

Now you are going to join the front with the back as follows: Make 1 s c in next 30 sts; skip the sts of the sleeve; 1 s c into the center of the 3 s c on row below; 1 s c in next 57 sts; skip sleeve sts; 1 s c in center of 3 s c of row below; 1 s e in last 29 sts. (118 sts).

PATTERN: Chain 4 sts; * skip 1 st; 1 d c in next 3 sts; 1 d c back into skipped st; repeat from * across row, end with d c in last st.

ROW 2; Chain 4 sts; skip 2 sts; * 1 d c in next 3 sts; 1 d c back into skipped st, skip next st, repeat from * across row, end with 1 d c in top of turning chain. Repeat Row 2 until the piece measures 6 inches from the underarm.

Continue now to finish around the edge of the sweater. Work s c along the front edge (keeping the work flat) up to the corner of neck edge.

BEADING ROW: Chain 5 sts; * skip 1 st; 1 treble crochet in next st; repeat from * around neck edge; 1 row of s c along 2nd front edge; 1 s c in each st around the bottom. Break yarn.

SLEEVES: Tie yarn at the underarm and work in the pattern stitch as on the sweater for 5 1/2 inches, from underarm. Break yarn and sew up sleeve. Make the other sleeve the same way.

BOOTIES: Instep and Sole: Chain 10 sts, turn, 1 s c in 2nd st from hook and in each of next 8 sts. Chain 1, turn. Work in s c, st for st for 8 more rows. Chain 24 sts, join with a slip st to corner, 9 s c along side of instep; 9 s c across toe; 9 s c along 2nd side of instep; 1 s c in each chain (51 sts). Work around in s c for 8 more rows. Break yarn. Make another piece the same way.

Top Part: Tie yarn at the 12th st of the chain at the back and work in the PATTERN STITCH as on the sweater for 2 1/2 inches. (8 groups around). Break yarn, leaving enough to sew up the back of bootie. Sew sole. Trim with ribbon.

BONNET: Starting at the center back: Chain 3 sts, join with a slip st to form a ring. Make 6 s c into ring.

2nd ROUND: 2 s c in each st.

3rd ROUND: (Mark the beginning of the round with a colored thread.) 1 s c in next st, 2 s c in next st, repeat around once.

4th ROUND: 1 s c in next 2 sts; 2 s c in next st; repeat around once.

Keep increasing 6 sts on a round, having 1 more stitch between each increase until you have 12 sts between each increase. (84 sts). Chain 1, turn and work in s c over 70 sts; Chain 4, turn and work in the PATTERN STITCH (17 groups) for 3 1/2 to 4 inches. Work 1 s c in each st across front.

NECK BAND: Tie yarn at corner, s c along neck edge, placing 2 sts on each row across front piece, 1 s c in each st across back section, 2 s c on each row on 2nd front piece. Chain 1, turn and work in s c for 3 more rows. Break yarn.

Bottle Cover

REQUIREMENTS:

YARN: 1-ounce 3-ply Baby Yarn.

CROCHET HOOK: #4 Bone.

Starting at the center bottom: Chain 3 sts; join with a slip st to form a ring. Make 6 s c into ring.

2nd ROUND: 2 s c in each stitch around.

3rd ROUND: (Mark the beginning of round with a colored thread) 1 s c in next st, 2 s c in next st, repeat around once.

4th ROUND: 1 s c in next 2 sts; 2 s c in next st; repeat around once.

Having 1 more st between each increase, keep increasing 6 sts on a round until you have 7 sts between each increase. (54 sts). Slip st in next st; work 1 round of s c picking up the back thread.

PATTERN: Chain 4 sts, * skip 1 st; 1 d c in next 3 sts; 1 d c back into the skipped st, repeat from * around, end with d c in the last st.

ROW 2; Chain 4 sts, turn, skip 2 sts, * 1 d c in next 3 sts; 1 d c back into skipped st; skip next st, repeat from * around, ending with d c in top of chain. Repeat Row 2 for 7 inches or until it measures to neck of bottle. Break yarn. Sew seams and trim with ribbon.
