Stars & stripes hat & bag

MATERIALS: Columbia-Minerva Washable Rug Yarn (1-3/4 oz. pull skeins) – 4 skeins each of Scarlet & White & 5 skeins of Navy

“Boye” Crochet Hook, Size K

GAUGE: 4 sc & 3 ch-1 sps to 2″; 5 rows to 2″

HAT: With White – ch 29.

Row 1: 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook, then work ch 1 & 1 sc in every other ch across: counting ch-2 at start there are 14 sc & 14 sps, ch 2, turn.

Short Row 2: 1 sc & ch 1 in each ch-1 sp, end 1 sl st in next to last sp, ch 1, turn.

Row 3: 1 sc & ch 1 in each sp, end ch 1, 1 sc in turning-ch, ch 2, turn.
Repeat Rows 2 & 3 until last row has 10 sc & 10 sps, end at outer edge, change to Scarlet, ch 2, turn.

**Long Row: Work 14 sc & 14 sps across, ch 1, turn.
Repeat Rows 3 & 2 until last row has 10 sc & 10 sps, end at outer edge, change to White, ch 2, turn **. With White repeat from ** to 3 sections for back of hat. Fasten off.

Front: Turn and join Scarlet in 3rd sp from outer edge, work Long Row of 12 sc & 12 sps. Work 3 more sections for front, do not break off Scarlet.

To Join: 1 sc in 3rd sp on starting chain, 1 sc in next sp on last row, alternate 1 sc in each side to top, fasten, draw top tog.

Brim: Join Navy in first sc on joining row, work ch 1 & 1 sc in end of each row across front, ch 2, turn.

Row 2: 1 sc in first sc for an inc, work ch 1 & 1 sc in each sp, and 1 sc in turn, ch 2, turn. Repeat Row 2 four times. Fasten off. Sew ends of brim over each side. Paste white felt stars on brim.

BAG: With White – ch 25. With 12 sc & 12 sps on first row, work same as hat. Working to 3 sc from end, ch 1, sl st in next sp on short row every other row until last row has 1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc, end at outer edge. Continue until there are 6 White & 6 Scarlet sections. Do not break off Scarlet after last row.

Joining Row: Starting at outer edge, ch 1, 1 sc in turning-ch of starting chain, * 1 sc in next space on short row, 1 sc in next space on starting-chain, repeat from * to center. Fasten off. Draw center tog. Join Navy in any long row on outer edge, ch 1, 1 sc in next space, repeat from around. Join & fasten off. Make another piece exactly the same.

Gusset & Shoulder Strap: With Navy – ch 6. With 5 sc across work in sc for about 60″ or desired length. Fasten off. Leaving 2 White & 2 Scarlet sections free for top edges, sew strap to remainder of back & front for gusset leaving the rest for shoulder strap. Join ends. If desired paste 15 small white stars on strap & gusset and one on center of back & front. Close with Navy chain. Line if desired.

Tote bag

MATERIALS: 6 skeins Columbia-Minerva Washable Rug Yarn (1-3/4 oz. pull skeins).

“Boye” Crochet Hook, Size K

GAUGE: 2 sc 10 1″; 2 rows to 1″
Note: Work with double yarn throughout.

SIDES: With Scarlet, ch 23.
Row 1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, work 22 sc across, ch 1, turn.
Row 2: 1 sc in each sc, ch 1, turn.
Repeat Row 2 for 48 more rows. Fasten off.

Gussets: Ch 10. work on 9 sc for 20 rows. Fasten off. Make 2.

Straps: With Black, ch 26. Starting in 2nd ch, work 1 sc in each ch to last ch, 3 sc in last ch, then working back on other side of chain, 1 sc in each st. Fasten off. Make 4.

Handles: With black, ch 38. Work same as straps. Make 2. Baste gussets in place. On right side with Black work 1 sc and ch 1 in every other row along sides and bottom as shown. With Black work 2 rows of sc on top edges only of back and front. Sew straps in place as shown with 3″ extending at top. Join handles to straps with 1-1/2″ metal rings.

SIZE: 10″ x 12-1/2″ (approx)

MATERIALS: 4 oz. Sport yarn, Crochet hook size G (or size required to crochet to gauge)

GAUGE: 9 pat sts = 2″ (with double strand of yarn)

PATTERN: Row 1: Ch 1, * sc in next dc, sc in ch-1 sp, repeat from * across, end sc in next dc, sc in end sp.
Row 2: Ch 4, dc in 3rd sc, * ch 1, sk 1 st, dc in next st, repeat from * across, end dc in last st.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each of first 2 dc, * sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next dc, repeat from * across, end 2 sc in end sp.
Row 4: Ch 3, dc in 2nd sc, * ch 1, sk 1 st, dc in next st, repeat from * across. Repeat these 4 rows for pattern.

BAG: With a double strand of yam, ch 92.
Row 1 (right side): Sk first 3 ch, * dc in next st, ch 1, sk 1 st, repeat from * across, end dc in last st. Work even in pat until there are 36 rows. Cut one strand of yam.

With single strand, work as follows: Row 1 (right side): Ch 2, hdc in next st, * ch 1, sk 1 st, hdc in next st, repeat from * across.
Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in ch-1 sp, * ch 1, hdc in ch-1 sp, repeat from * across. Repeat these 2 rows once.
Next Row (right side): Work sc loosely from left to right, inserting hook in ch-spaces to obtain picots. Fasten off.

Right side facing, with single strand, work sl sts in sc of 28th row, keeping yam on wrong side. Fasten off. Fold bag on this sc row with upper part of bag towards you.
Picot Row 1: Work sc in the same spaces as sl sts, inserting hook in back lps only. Fasten off.
Picot Row 2: Work in same spaces as follows: sc in back lp of next st, * ch 3, sc in first ch, sk 2 sts, sc in back lp of next st, repeat from * across.

Work sl sts in 32nd row from lower edge same as for 28th row. Work Picot Row 2 only in same spaces as sl sts.

STARS: Make 2. Use single strand of yarn, ch 6; join with sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: * Ch 1, sc in ring, repeat from * 10 times.
Rnd 2: Ch 4 (first dc made), dc in ch-1 sp, * ch 2, dc in ch-1 sp, repeat from * around, end ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch of rnd.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, * (sc, ch 1, sc) in ch-1 sp, ch 1, repeat from * around, end sl st in first ch of rnd.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, * sc in ch-1 sp, ch 1, repeat from * around, end sl st in first ch of rnd–45 sts.

Points: Row 1: Ch 1, sc in each of next 5 sts of rnd, turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each of the 5 sc, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, work 2 sc tog, sc in each of next 3 sc, turn.
Row 4: Ch 1, work 2 sc tog, sc in each of next 2 sc, turn.
Row 5: Ch 1, work 2 sc tog, sc in next sc, turn.
Row 6: Ch 1, work 2 sc tog, fasten off. * Join yarn in next st on rnd; work point on next 5 sts, repeat from * around–9 points.

FINISHING: Fold bag in half having fold along one long side. Work parts tog in sc, leaving top open. Sew a star to center of front and back.

Fringe: Cut strands about 10′ long. Right side facing, with 4 strands for each fringe, fold in half, draw fold through space at edge, draw ends through fold and pull to tighten. Work 7 fringes evenly spaced along bottom.

Strap: Make 2 twisted cords about 39″ each using 3 groups of 3 strands of yarn. Knot ends of cords. Sew to front and back of bag about 1-1/2″ from side.

Woman’s Day Granny Square Crochet

Giant granny bag

SIZE: 11-1/2″ x 13″ (approx)

MATERIALS: Knitting worsted, 2 four-oz. black, 1 four-oz. turquoise, small amounts of bright blue & yellow-green. Crochet hook size H.

SQUARES: Make 2. With royal blue, ch 6, join with sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, * ch 3, 3 dc in ring, repeat from * twice, end ch 3, sl st in 3rd st of ch 3, sl st to comer.
Rnd 2: (Ch 3, 3 dc, ch 3, 4 dc) in corner space, * ch 2, (4 dc, ch 3, 4 dc) in corner space, repeat from * twice, end ch 2, sl st in top of ch 3, sl st to corner space.
Rnd 3: (Ch 3, 3 dc, ch 3, 4 dc) in corner space, * ch 2, 4 dc in next space, ch 2, (4 dc, ch 3, 4 dc) in corner space, repeat from * twice, end ch 2, 4 dc in next sp, ch 2, sl st in top of ch 3, sl st to corner space. Fasten off.
Rnd 4: With yellow green, (ch 3, 3 dc, ch 3, 4 dc) in corner space, * ch 2, 4 dc in next space, ch 2, 4 dc in next space, ch 2, (4 dc, ch 3, 4 dc) in corner space, repeat from * twice, end ch 2, 4 dc in next space, ch 2, 4 dc in next space, ch 2, sl st in top of ch 3, sl st to corner space. Fasten off.

Continue working as for Rnd 4, having 1 more dc group on each side every rnd.
Rnds 5 and 6: Work in turquoise.
Rnds 7 and 8: Bright blue.
Rnds 9 and 10: Turquoise.
Rnd 11: Yellow green.
Rnd 12: Black. On Rnd 12, ch 1 between dc groups on sides.
Rnd 13: Black. Work dc groups along first side, work sc in each st along 2nd side, work dc groups along 3rd side, work sc in each st along 4th side.

FINISHING: Sew squares together leaving a side with dc groups open. Work 1 row sc around open side (top).

Tassels: Make 16. Wind yarn 4 or 5 times around a 6″ piece of cardboard. Remove from cardboard. With crochet hook, pull yarn through a st at the bottom edge, then pull through its own loop. Cut loop at bottom.

Handle: With 5 strands of yarn, work a chain approximately 36′ long. Sew handle to inside corners of bag.
