Crocheting

Puppy’s coat

SIZE: About 10″ from neck to tail

MATERIALS: Knitting worsted weight yarn, scraps of a variety of colors (tan, red-brown, and black shown). Crochet hook, size H (if a larger size is desired, use larger hook) 3 buttons.

GAUGE: Square = 2-1/2″

GRANNY SQUARES: Make 19: With tan, ch 5, join with sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 for first dc, 2 dc in ring, ch 2 for comer, (3 dc in ring, ch 2) 3 times, join with sl st to top of starting ch. Fasten off.
Rnd 2: Join red-brown at any corner, ch 3 for first dc, in same space work 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1, (in next ch-2 comer work 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) 3 times, join with sl st to top of starting ch. Fasten off.
Rnd 3: Join black at any comer, ch 3 for first dc, in same comer work 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, * ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, in corner work 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc; repeat from * 2 times more, end ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, join with sl st to starting ch. Fasten off.

FINISHING: Join squares together following diagram below. To shape back edge, fold comers under (dash lines) and sew in place.

Border: Join black and work around coat evenly in sc, working 3 sc in each outside comer and no stitches on inside corners. Work another rnd in sc as before, working buttonloops on right front edge as follows: Work 2 sc after comer, ch 6, skip 3 sc, sc to last 5 sc before comer, ch 6, skip 3 sc, continue around in sc.
Next Rnd: Work in sc as before, working 6 sc in each loop. Sew 2 buttons in place on left front edge as indicated on diagram. Measure coat on dog. If needed, coat can be made slightly larger around by adding rows of sc to the end of the strap that fits under the dog’s body. Adjust as necessary and sew last button in place on strap; use a ch-1 space in granny square for buttonloop, as shown in photograph.

MATERIALS: Washable Rug Yarn (1-3/4 oz pull skeins) 3 skeins color A & 1 skein of Color B
“Boye” Crochet Hook size “I”

GAUGE: 3 sc, 2 ch (1 sp) = 2 inches

Body: With Color A-chain “ch” 28.
Row 1: 1 single crochet “sc” in 2nd ch from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 sc in next ch, repeat from * across, ch 9, turn.
Row 2: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook [ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 sc in next ch> 3 times, * ch 1, 1 sc in next sc, repeat from * across, end with 1 sc in last sc, ch 1, turn: 18 sc across with ch-1 between.
Row 3: 1 sc in first sc, * ch 1, 1 sc in next sc, repeat from * across, ch 5, turn.
Row 4: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 sc in next ch, * ch 1, 1 sc in next sc, repeat from * across, end with 1 sc in last sc, ch 1, turn: 20 sc across with ch-1 between, ch 1, turn.
Rows 5 through 10: 1 sc in first sc, * ch 1 , 1 sc in next sc, repeat from across, ch 1, turn.

Neck: 1 slip stitch “sl st” in first sc, [ch 1, 1 sl st in next sc> twice, * ch 1, 1 sc in next sc, repeat from * across, ch 1, turn: 1 7 sc across with ch-1 between. Work 9 rows on the 17 patterns “pats”, end at neck edge, ch 8, turn.
Next row: 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook, [ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 sc in next ch> twice, * ch 1, 1 sc in next sc, repeat from across, ch 1, turn: 20 sc across with ch-1 between. Work 7 rows on the 20 pats, ch 1, turn.
Next row: Work to last 2 sc and ch-1 spaces, ch 1, turn. Work 1 row on the 18 pats, ch 1, turn. Work to last 4 sc and ch-1 spaces. Fasten off. Crochet 1 row of sl st all around, join and fasten off.

Belt: Ch 5.
Row 1: 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook, ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 sc in last ch, ch 1, turn.
Row 2: 1 sc in first sc, * ch 1, 1 sc in next sc, ch 1, 1 sc in last stitch, ch 1, turn. Repeat Row 2 to 6 inches from start, do not fasten off. Crochet 1 row of sl st all around belt, join to first st. Fasten off.

Collar: With Color B – ch 17.
Row 1: 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 sc in next ch, repeat from * across, ch 1 , turn. Counting turning-ch, there are 9 sc across with ch-1 between. Continue in pat for 8 more rows.
Row 10: 1 sc in first sc, (ch 1, 1 sc in next sc> twice, ch 1, turn. Work 7 more rows on the 3 sc. Fasten off. Leaving 3 pats free at center on last long row for neck, join B and finish same as other side. Sew 1 row of Color A around collar using a couching st. Embroider or appliqué a star in each corner. Sew collar to neck. Sew 1 button at each side and using a ch-1 space for a buttonhole, button belt to body. Crochet two 12-inch chains and sew to front edge of collar.

MATERIALS: Washable Rug Yarn (1-3/4 oz pull skeins): 2 skeins Color A & 1 skein of Color B
“Boye” Crochet Hook Size “I”

GAUGE: 5 sc = 2 inches

Body: With Color A – chain “ch” 18.
Row 1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, work 1 sc in each ch: 17 sc across, ch 12, turn.
Row 2: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, work 1 sc in each of next 11 ch, 1 sc in each sc of first row, ch 1, turn – 28 sc across.
Row 3: 2 sc 1 n first sc for an increase “inc,” 1 sc in each sc to last stitch “st”, 2 sc in last st, ch 1, turn: 30 sc. Work 6 more rows on the 30 sc, ch 1, turn.
Row 10: 1 sc in each sc to last 2 sts, ch 1, turn: 2 sts left off for start of neck. Work 2 more rows on the 28 sts, ch 1 turn. Break off A. Join Color B and work 4 rows. Break off B. Join A and work 2 more rows, ch 3 at end of last row, turn.
Row 19: 1 sc in each of 2nd and 3rd ch from hook, 1 sc in each sc to end, ch 1, turn. Work 6 more rows on the 30 sc.
Row 26: Draw up a loop in each of 2 sts, yarn over “yo” and draw through all 3 loops for a decrease “dec” work to last 2 sts, dec 1 st as before, ch 1, turn.
Rows 27 & 28: 1 sc in each of the 28 sc, ch 1, turn.
Row 29: 1 sc in each of next 17 sc. Fasten off. With Color B – crochet 1 row of slip stitch “sl st” all around.

Collar: With Color B – ch 20. Work 4 rows in sc on the 19 sc. Fasten off. Sew to neck. Underneath Section: With Color A – ch 23. Work 22 sc across first row, ch 1, turn.
Row 2: 1 sc in first sc, ch 1, skip 1 sc for buttonhole, 1 sc in each sc to last 2 sc, ch 1, sk 1 p 1 sc, 1 sc in last st, ch 1, turn.
Row 3: 1 sc in each sc and in each buttonhole, ch 1, turn. Work 5 rows on the 22 sc. Dec 1 sc at each side of every row until 8 sc remain “rem.” Work 9 more rows on the 8 sc. Fasten off. With Color B – crochet 1 row of sl st all around. Sew 2 buttons at each side of narrow end. Sew 1 button to each side of body and button underneath section in place.
