Starry Golf Club Mitts

MATERIALS: 3 skeins Navy, 1 skein White & 2 skeins Scarlet

“Boye” Crochet Hook, Size J

GAUGE: 5 sc to 2″

BACK & FRONT: Starting at lower edge with Navy – ch 8.

Row 1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, work 7 sc across, ch 1, turn. Work on the 7 sc for 12 more rows. Dec 1 sc in center of next row. Work 2 more rows. Inc 1 sc each side on next row. Work on the 8 sc to 25 rows from start, dec’ing 1 at each side on last row. Fasten off.

SIDES: With Scarlet – ch 4. Work on the 3 sc for 2 rows, change to White, ch 1, turn. Continue in stripes of 2 rows each of White & Scarlet until long enough to fit around sides and lower edge of back or front, end with a Scarlet stripe. Fasten off. Sew tog with matching cotton thread. With Scarlet crochet 24″ chain. Start at ** of golf mitts Number TT-11″>Click Here!, trim with pompon. Cut 10 white felt stars and sew on as shown.

DAISY MERCERIZED CROCHET COTTON, Art. 65, Size 20: 6 skeins Lt. Pink and 4 skeins Rose Pink; or,

LILY MERCHOCHET MERCERIZED CROCHET COTTON, Art. 161, Size 20: 8 balls Baby Pink and 5 balls Beauty Pink.

No. 12 Steel Crochet Hook.

¾ yd. Rose linen or Indian Head.

PLACE MAT measures 12 x 17 1/2 inches.

Work tightly for best results.

PLACE MAT (Make 4): 1st MOTIF (21/4″):

CENTER: With Baby Pink, ch 30.

Row 1: Dc in 9th ch from hook, (ch 2, sk 2 ch, dc in next ch) 7 times.

Row 2: Ch 5, turn. sk 1st sp, dc in next dc, (ch 2, dc in next dc) 6 times, ch 2, dc in 3d st of end sp. Repeat Row 2 six times (8 rows square).

EDGE: Ch 6, sc in same st with last dc, * (ch 3, dc in next dc, ch 3, sc in next dc 3 times, ch 3, (dc, ch 3, dc) in corner st, ch 3, sc in next dc; repeat from * around; end with ch 3, dc in corner dc, ch 3, sl st in 3d st of ch-6.

Rnd 2: Ch 8, dc in next dc, (ch 5, dc in next dc) 3 times, * ch 11, dc in next corner dc, (ch 5, dc in next dc) 4 times; repeat from * around; join final 11-ch to 3d st of ch-8.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same st, * (3 sc in next sp, ch 4, sl st in last sc for a p, 2 sc in same sp, sc in next dc) 4 times, in corner sp make 3 sc, a ch-4 p, 4 sc, ** make a ch-7 p, 4 sc, a ch-4 p and 3 sc; sc in next dc; repeat from * around; join and fasten off.

2d MOTIF: Repeat to ** in Rnd 3 in 1st motif; ch 3, sl st in 1 lp of center st of a corner p on 1st Motif, being careful that the 8th row of CENTER of all Motifs will be on the same side after joining. Ch 3, sl st back in last sc on 2d Motif, 4 sc in corner sp, ch 2, sl st in next p on 1st Motif, ch 2, sl st back in last sc, 2 sc in same sp, sc in next dc. Join the next 5 ps on both Motifs, as for last p, then join corner ps as for 1st corner ps, and complete rnd as for 1st Motif. BORDER: Attach to center st of a corner p, ch 3, dc in same st, ch 4, holding back the last lp of each dc on hook, make 2 dc in same st, Y0 and draw thru all 3 lps on hook (Cluster made), ** ch 3, hdc in next p. * (ch 5, hdc in next p) 5 times, (ch 4, a 2-dc Cluster) twice in joining of corner ps, ch 4, hdc in next p; repeat from * to corner, ch 3, 2-dc Cluster in center st of corner p, (ch 4, 2-dc Cluster) twice in same at; repeat from ** around; end with ch 3, Cluster in corner p, ch 4, join to 1st dc.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, 4 sc in next sp, sc in Cluster, ** 3 sc in next sp, sc in hdc, * (5 sc in next sp, sc in hdc) 5 times, (4 sc in next sp, sc in next st) 3 times; repeat from * across; 3 sc in 1st ch-3 sp at corner, sc in Cluster, (4 sc in next sp, sc in Cluster) twice; repeat from ** around; join to 1st sc.

Rnd 3: Ch 5, turn. sk 2 sc in next sp, dc in next sc, * (ch 2, sk 2 Sc, dc in next sc) repeated to center sc at corner, ch 5, dc in same at; repeat from * around; end with ch 2, dc in 3d st of 1st ch-5 (ending at exact corner).

Rnd 4: Ch 5, turn, sk 1st sp, dc in next dc, * (ch 2, dc in next dc) repeated to center st of corner sp, ch 5, dc in same st; repeat from * around, ending as in last rnd.

Repeat Rnd 4 eight times.

Rnd 13: Ch 6, sc in same st with last dc, * (ch 3, dc in next dc, ch 3, sc in next dc) repeated to corner, ch 3, (dc, ch 3, dc) in 3d at of corner sp, ch 3, sc in next dc; repeat from * around; end with ch 3, dc in corner dc, ch 3, sl st in 3d st of ch-6.

Rnd 14: Ch 8, dc in next dc, * (ch 5, dc in next dc) repeated to 1st dc at corner, ch 11, dc in next corner dc; repeat from * around; join to 3d st of 1st ch-8.

Rnd 15: (3 sc, ch-4 p, 2 sc) in each ch-5 sp around, with (3 sc, p, 4 sc, ch-7 p, 4 sc, ch-4 p and 2 sc) in corner lps. Join and fasten off.

FLOWER: With Beauty Pink, ch 2, 8 sc in 2d ch from hook, join to back lp of 1st sc.

Rnd 2: * Ch 6, 3 dtr in same st, ch 4, sl st in last dtr for a p, 3 dtr in back lp of next sc, ch 6, sl st in same sc, sl st in next sc; repeat from * 3 times. Cut with 10″ sewing end. Make 15. Sew one on center of each Motif.

BORDER ROW: Make one Flower. Make a 2d Flower up to p on 4th petal, ch 2, sl st in a p on 1st Flower, ch 2, sl st back in last dtr on 2d Flower (joining-p made); complete Flower. Make and join 14 Flowers into a straight row for each long side of Mat. Connect at ends with 7 Flowers (42 Flowers total on Border), and sew on center of Border. Make 3 more Place Mats.

Stretch and pin Mats right-side-down in true shape. Steam and press dry thru a cloth.

APRON: BAND: With Baby Pink, make a 64″ chain.

Row 1: Dc in 9th st from hook, * (ch 2, sk 2 ch, dc in next ch) * repeated to measure 15″, ch 5, dc in same st (corner sp made); repeat from * to* to measure 27″ and make corner sp; repeat from * to * for same number of sps as 1st side. Cut and rip excess chain.

Row 2: Ch 5, turn, sk 1st sp, dc in next dc, * (ch 2, dc in next dc) repeated to center at of next corner sp, ch 5, dc in same at; repeat from * around, making final dc in 3d at of end sp. Repeat Row 2 eight times.

EDGE: Repeat Rnd 13 of Mat across end and down inner edge to 1st sp before 1st corner angle, ch 3, sk 2 sps (1 on each side of angle), sc in next dc; continue, working next corner angle in same way, then continue Rnd 13 to end of Band, across end and around outside edge; join.

Rnd 2: Repeat Rnd 14 of Mat, omitting ch-5 between 2 dc at 2 lower inner corner angles.

Rnd 3: Repeat Rnd 15 of Mat.

Make a row of 13 Flowers as for Mat) for each side band. Connect with a row of 22 Flowers across lower band. Sew on band.

POCKET: Make a square of 4 Motifs as for Mat. Sew a Flower on each Motif.

Stretch and pin Band and Pocket right-side-down in true shape. Steam and press dry thru a cloth. Cut a piece of cloth to fit Band, allowing for narrow hems. Hem sides and lower edge and sew to Band. Gather top edge to measure 15″. Make waistband and ties and sew in place. Sew Pocket in place.

Happy Face Rug

MATERIALS: Columbia-Minerva Washable Rug Yarn (1-3/4 oz. skeins) in the following colors: 6 skeins Flesh; 3 skeins Tangerine and small amounts of Scarlet, Teal Blue & Black.

Needles: 1 each “Boye” crochet hook sizes 15 (wooden) and K (aluminum).

With Size 15 Hook & double strands of Flesh – ch 2. Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Mark beg of rows.

Row 2: 2 sc in each sc – 12 sc.
Row 3: * 1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around – 18 sc. Continue to inc 6 sc around on every row not directly over previous incs to 114 sc on 19th row. SI st in next st. Fasten off.

Loop St: Wrap yarn from front to back around left index finger, insert hook in sc and around the 2 strands on finger and draw through st, remove finger, yo & through loops on hook.

HAIR: With Size K hook & 1 strand of Tangerine, * work 1 sc in each of next 15 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * 4 times more, 1 sc in each of next 14 sc, leaving 20 Flesh sc free, ch 1 , turn.

Loop Row 1 – Wrong Side: With 2 strands of Tangerine – skip 1 sc, 1 loop st in each sc to last 3 Tangerine sts, fasten off.
Loop Row 2: Join the 2 ends in 4th loop st from start of previous row, work 1 loop st in each sc to last 4 sts, fasten off.
Loop Row 3: Join in 15th loop st from start of previous row, work loop st to last 15, fasten off.
Loop Row 4: Join in 11th loop st from start of previous row, work loop st to last 11, fasten off.

EYES: Make 2. With Teal Blue – ch 2. Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join & fasten off. Sew in place. Outline with ch 18 of Black. With Black – ch 6 for eyebrows. Sew in place.

NOSE: With Scarlet – ch 2. 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, turn. Inc 1 sc at end of next row then every other row at same edge twice more. Fasten off. Sew in place.

MOUTH: With 2 strands of Black – ch 30, fasten off. Sew in place with long st at each side.

Potholders

MATERIALS: 1 skein of mail color for potholder & small amounts of colors for embroidery.

“Boye” Crochet Hook, Size G

GAUGE: 3 sc to 1″

Chain 21. Starting in 2nd ch from hook, work 20 sc across, ch 1, turn.

Row 2: 1 sc in each sc, ch 1, turn. Repeat Row 2 for 20 more rows, ch 10 for loop, join to first chain with sl st. Fasten off.

To Trim: Outline desired design with basting thread. Starting at center, embroider couching stitch (see diagram) working to outer edge of design. If desired, face with fabric.

Couching stitch: Lay yarn along line. With matching cotton thread, bring needle up at A, over the yarn and down at B. Bring needle up at C about 1/4″ from A-B, over the yarn and down at D. Continue, holding yarn taut with left hand as you sew. When motif is finished, pull ends of yarn through to reverse side and cut short–about 1/4″
