Afghan square belts

Put together to make a waist cinch or hip belt. Both are crocheted from same directions: yarn, hook change size. Laced-up 4″ wide belt is in three muted red-tones of jute, has twisted cord.

Orange, gold, green belt, in light-weight knitting worsted, is about 2″ wide for slipping through belt loops of jeans; length is adjustable.

SIZE: Adjustable.

MATERIALS: For hip belt: Light-weight knitting worsted, 4-ply sport yarn, or wool and Shetland wool, 1 oz. each of orange (A), gold (B) and green (C). Steel crochet hook size 0. (Or English aluminum size 10.)

For waist belt: Unpolished jute, such as Lily Mills Jute-Tone, (1) 4-oz. spool each of rose (A), pink (B) and red (C). Aluminum crochet hook size I (Or English size 5.)

GAUGE: Each small square = 1-3/4″; each large square = 3-1/2″.

Notes: Directions are the same for both belts. Hook size and yarn determine size of square. Squares are worked tightly to minimize stretching. When changing colors, work over all short ends of yarn to hide them. Work over short ends when crocheting edging.

SQUARE: With A, ch 3, join with sl st to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), make 2 dc in ring, ch 3, * 3 dc in ring, ch 3, repeat from * twice, join with sl st to top of ch 3. End off A.
Rnd 2: Join B in a ch-3 sp, ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc), 2 hdc in same sp, hdc in 2nd dc of 3-dc cluster, * (3 hdc, ch 1, 3 hdc) in comer ch-3 sp, hdc in 2nd dc of 3-dc cluster, repeat from * twice, 3 hdc, ch 1 in same sp as first 3 hdc, join with sl st to top of ch 2. End off B.
Rnd 3: Join C in a ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp as joining, * sc in each of 7 hdc, work sc, ch 1, sc in ch-1 sp at corner, repeat from * 3 times, end last repeat sc in same sp as joining. Join with sl st to ch 1. End off C.

Work 2nd motif in same way, do not end off C. Holding squares with wrong sides facing, sl st squares together through back loops. Continue in this way, joining as many motifs as necessary for belt length desired.

Edging: For hip belt: Attach C in 2nd sc on long edge. Work 1 sc in each sc and 1 hdc in st at joinings if necessary to keep edging even. At first corner, * make a ch 11″ long, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (insert hook in top 2 threads of ch) *, (sc in each of 5 sc on square, work from * to *) twice, sc across other long edge as before, work 3 ties as before, join with sl st to first sc on edging.

For waist belt: Attach C in 2nd sc on long edge. Work same as for other belt to first corner, ch 2; on short edge, work 1 sc in each of 2 sc, ch 2, skip 1 sc, work 1 sc in each of 3 sc, ch 2, skip 1 sc, work 1 sc in each of 2 sc, ch 2, work sc across long edge as before, work 4 loops on short edge as before. Join with sl st to first sc on edging.

Lacing: Using 1 strand of each color, make a twisted cord desired length. (see below). Lace through front as shown.

MAKE A TWISTED CORD
Method requires two people. Tie one end of yarn around pencil. Loop yarn over center of second pencil, back to and around first, and back to second, making as many strands between pencils as needed for thickness of cord; knot end of pencil. Length of yarn between pencils should be three times length of cord desired. Each person holds yarn just below pencil with one hand and twists pencil with other hand, keeping yarn taut. When yarn begins to kink, catch center over doorknob or hook. Bring pencils together for one person to hold, while other grasps center of yarn, sliding hand down at short intervals, letting yarn twist.

Rope belt patterns

All belts are made with ropes of COATS & CLARK’S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, or WINTUK 4 ply (Pull-Out Skeins): For color and amount, see directions for the belt you are making. A rope is made of 6-yard strands of yarn, twisted and doubled. The finished length (after doubling) is approximately 70″ to 80″. The number of strands for each rope varies from 3 to 5 (see individual belt). When making braided belts, keep braids absolutely flat.

GENERAL DIRECTIONS FOR ROPE

Tie one end of yarn to a doorknob. Stretch yarn out and trim ends evenly. With crochet hook or bobby pin, pull ends through hole of a thread spool; make a knot. Slip a pencil through strands of yarn, between spool and knot (see Fig. 1). Holding the spool, twist yarn tightly by twirling pencil. As you twist yarn, move in as yarn contracts, but don’t let yarn kink. When yarn is tightly twisted, pencil will spin in reverse direction when let go. At this point, bring yam around a chair or have a friend hold center of rope to hold it taut. Fold in half, remove pencil and spool. Twist in opposite direction to form rope, keeping rope taut and moving fingers down rope as it twists. Twist yarn tightly at end; cut yarn from doorknob and knot.

BELT NO. 1

COATS & CLARK’S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply (“Tangle-Proof” Pull-Out Skeins): about 1-1/2 ounces of No. 764 Deep Purple and about 1 ounce No. 265 Flame; and COATS & CLARK’S RED HEARTO “WINTUK,” 4 Ply (“Tangle-Proof” Pull-Out Skeins): about 1 ounce of No. 763 Plum; and J&P. COATS SUPER SHEEN or COATS & CLARK’S O.N.T. MERCERIZED SEWING THREAD: 1 spool of matching color.

This three-color belt is made with 7 ropes, which are sewn together. Each rope is made with 5 strands of yarn.

Make 3 ropes of Deep Purple; 2 of Flame and 2 of Plum. Starting 5″ from ends, sew together lengthwise, having the 3 Deep Purple ropes in center, 1 each of Plum on each side and 1 each of Flame on outside. Sew together until desired length is reached.

To Finish, wrap ends of sewn section with yarn for 1/2″. Cut ends to desired length and untwist ropes to form a crinkled tassel.

BELT NO. 2

COATS & CLARK’S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply (“Tangle-Proof” Pull-Out Skeins): about 1-1/2 inches of No. 512 Lt. Turquoise; about 1 ounce of No. 588 Amethyst and of 3/4 ounce of No. 679 Nile Green.

Lt. Turquoise is color A. Amethyst is color B. Nile Green is color C.

This is a three-color braided belt with tassels and is made with 12 ropes. Each rope is made with 3 strands of yarn.

Make 6 ropes of Lt. Turquoise, 4 of Amethyst and 2 of Nile Green. Leaving 6″ ends, tape yarn to a table edge with 2 ropes of color C in middle, 2 ropes of color B on each side of C and 3 ropes of color A on outside (see Fig. 2).

To braid, place ropes A over B’s and cross over C (see Fig. 3). Then place ropes B over A’s and cross under C (see Fig. 4). Continue, repeating this procedure until desired length is reached.

To finish, wrap each end of belt (at edge of braiding) with yarn for 3/4″. Untwist ropes below this point and steam-press to get out crinkles. Tie a piece of yarn around ends 3/4″ down from wrapped part. Trim remaining loose ends to 4-1/2″ for tassel.

BELT NO. 3

COATS & CLARK’S RED HEARTS KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply (“Tangle-Proof” Pull-out Skeins): about 4 ounces of No. 668 Lime Green.

This is a solid color braided belt with tassels and is made with 12 three-strand ropes.

Tape the twelve ropes to a table 14″ from ends; braid, using each group of 3 ropes as one section of braid (see Figs. 5, 6 and 7). When desired length is reached, wrap each end of braid with yarn for 3/4″.

To finish, knot end of each rope a desired length with ordinary knot; cut off excess rope next to knot.

BELT NO. 4

COATS & CLARK’S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply (“Tangle-Proof” Pull-Out Skeins): about 1-1/2 ounces of No. 850 Cobalt Blue and about 1 ounce of No. 111 Eggshell.

This is a two-color braided belt, made with 7 ropes. Make 5 three-strand ropes in Cobalt Blue and 2 five-strand ropes in Eggshell.

The 5 ropes in Cobalt Blue are handled as one rope in the braiding. Tape ropes to table 8″ from ends, placing the 5 ropes of same color on outside. Make a braid of three, keeping the 5 ropes flat (see Fig. 8 below). When desired length is reached, wrap each end of braid with yarn for 3/4″. Cut off ends of Eggshell ropes close to bottom of wrapped yarn so that only the ends of the blue ropes remain. Knot end of each rope at desired length with ordinary knot; cut off excess rope close to knot.
